Two Years of Mulberry Market Co.: A Celebration of Growth, Gratitude & Community

Before there were workshops, gift bundles, or cozy corners filled with candles and curated finds, there was a jar of jam.

Mulberry Market Co. began in a small town in Michigan in 2016, where Hannah — our founder — first started selling homemade strawberry mulberry jam at farmers markets. What started with a folding table and a few handmade goods slowly grew into a thriving storefront on her family’s farm, known for its warm welcome, thoughtful gifts, and beautiful displays.

But in 2021, life brought a new chapter. After meeting her now-husband David, Hannah moved across the country to Washington State — and brought her dream with her. In June 2023, she opened the doors to a brand-new version of Mulberry Market Co. in Spokane.

And now, just two years in, we’re celebrating how far this little shop has come — and all the heart behind it.

Hannah - Owner of Mulberry Market Co.

Starting Over with Courage

“When I opened the doors here in Washington, my biggest hope was just to make it through the first year,” Hannah shared. “The rent was the highest I’d ever taken on, and I was starting completely from scratch again.”

There was pressure, yes — but also a quiet vision she couldn’t shake: “I’ve always dreamed of turning part of the shop into a coffee shop or café. That dream is still very much alive.”

Opening Day Memories

“I’ll never forget how many people came out for our ribbon cutting — it was completely overwhelming in the best way. When I look back at photos now, I can’t believe how empty the shelves were. I’m not sure what gave me the confidence to open with so little on the floor, but I’m so glad I did. It was the start of something so much bigger.”

What’s Changed Since Day One

Since opening in Spokane, the shop has grown in every direction. The larger space made room for more creativity — including new product lines, a thriving workshop program, and the launch of Mulberry Mini, a dedicated children’s section that’s become a beloved part of the business.

More recently, a carefully curated clothing section has joined the mix, something Hannah is especially excited to expand in year three.

Building a Community

What means the most? “Seeing people come back again and again — and bringing friends or family with them. That’s the best compliment. It tells me this is more than just a shop — it’s something people want to share.”

One unforgettable moment? “When someone came in from out of state and realized we were the same Mulberry Market Co. they used to shop at back in Michigan. They recognized a photo from our old space on the wall. Full-circle moments like that remind me why I do this.”

Behind the Scenes of Small Business

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t do it all — and that’s okay,” Hannah said. “There’s so much behind the scenes that people never see: financial pressure, decision fatigue, the weight of doing it all. I’ve had to learn to ask for help and trust others with parts of the business.”

Letting go has been tough, but it’s made room for an amazing team: “They’re not only capable, they’re often better at certain things than I ever was.”

Looking Ahead to Year Three

“Honestly, I’m just so excited to keep growing this community. I want to keep building on our workshops, monthly events, and one day… finally bring the coffee shop dream to life.”

Each year is a new chapter — and this one is just getting started.

A Heartfelt Thank You

“To every customer, workshop attendee, Instagram follower, and friend — thank you. Thank you for showing up, telling others about us, and making this little dream thrive.

You’re part of something so much bigger than a boutique. You’ve helped build a place where people feel welcome, inspired, and at home.”

Here’s to two years in Washington — and all that’s still to come.
